The rock music community is mourning the loss of Tommy DeCarlo, the singer who helped carry the legacy of the legendary band Boston to a new generation. DeCarlo has died at the age of 60 after a difficult battle with brain cancer.
His family confirmed the news on Monday, sharing an emotional message that reflected both their grief and their appreciation for the time they had with him.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026.”
The family explained that the musician had been diagnosed with brain cancer in September of last year, beginning a challenging medical fight that lasted several months.
“After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end,” the statement said.
They also asked fans and friends to respect their privacy during this painful period.
“During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another.”
A Difficult Medical Journey
Following the announcement of his illness, a GoFundMe page was created to help the family cover the growing costs of medical treatment. In that appeal, relatives shared more details about the health crisis that unfolded in late 2025.
According to the statement, DeCarlo suffered a sudden brain bleed in late September, which required emergency surgery.
“In late September, Dad suffered a sudden brain bleed and underwent an emergency craniotomy.”
During that operation, doctors discovered something even more serious.
“During surgery, doctors discovered two melanoma masses on his brain and another spot on his lungs.”
Despite the frightening diagnosis, those close to him said he remained determined and hopeful throughout the process.
After the operation, DeCarlo recovered enough to begin treatment. However, his condition became more complicated when he suffered another brain bleed before completing therapy.
He spent an entire month hospitalized from late November through December, fighting through multiple setbacks.
Even during that time, his family described him as someone who refused to give up.
“Our Dad is strong. He is a fighter. And he’s giving this battle everything he’s got.”
A Remarkable Path to Rock Stardom
Long before his illness, DeCarlo had already become part of one of rock music’s most inspiring stories.
In 2007, he stepped into the role of lead singer for Boston after the tragic death of the band’s original vocalist, Brad Delp.
At the time, DeCarlo was living a relatively ordinary life and reportedly working at a Home Depot store. But he had a deep love for Boston’s music and had recorded himself performing the band’s songs as a tribute to Delp.
He uploaded those performances online.
By chance, the recordings caught the attention of Tom Scholz, Boston’s founder and guitarist.
Shortly afterward, DeCarlo received a life-changing phone call inviting him to join the band on tour.
For many fans, it felt like something straight out of a rock-and-roll fairy tale — a devoted fan suddenly stepping onto the stage to sing the very songs he had admired for years.
Keeping Boston’s Legacy Alive
Boston had already cemented its place in music history with classic hits such as “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” and “Amanda.”
When DeCarlo joined the band, he helped keep that sound alive for audiences around the world.
On stage, he honored the spirit of the original recordings while bringing his own passion and energy to each performance.
Fans often noted that he approached the role with humility and deep respect for the band’s legacy.
Remembering His Impact
Following news of his death, tributes from fans and fellow musicians quickly spread across social media.
Many people remembered not only his voice, but also the extraordinary story of how he reached the stage — proof that passion and dedication can lead to unexpected opportunities.
Though Tommy DeCarlo is gone, the music he helped bring to life will continue to resonate with listeners for years to come.
Rest in peace, Tommy DeCarlo. 🎸
