For years, she believed something about herself that wasn’t true.

A Childhood Filled With Hardship
Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, her early life was marked by instability and hardship.
Her father left when she was only three years old, and much of her childhood was shaped by the struggles of her mother, Leola, who ran a small business while raising the family.
Constant moving became a normal part of life. At times, all of her belongings were packed into trash bags.
She later explained how that experience deeply affected her sense of self-worth.
“You start thinking of yourself as garbage that can easily be moved anywhere,” she once said in an interview.
When Life Changed Overnight
When she was nine, her mother suffered a serious car accident that left her with brain damage.
Afterward, her mother struggled with emotional control and became increasingly abusive. Eventually she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and the family situation grew even more unstable.
As a result, the children were placed into foster care and separated from one another.
At just ten years old, she found herself taking responsibility far beyond her age.
“I was basically a ten-year-old mom,” she later said.
Labeled “Stupid” — But the Truth Was Different
By the time she reached high school, she still hadn’t learned to read.
Not because she lacked intelligence, but because no one had taken the time to teach her properly.
Teachers and family members had repeated the same message for years: that she simply wasn’t capable.
Eventually, one teacher saw past that label and began helping her with private reading lessons.
Slowly, things began to change.
Trauma and Survival
Her teenage years brought even more trauma.
While living in foster care, she experienced abuse and later survived a sexual assault by a police cadet at the age of 17.
The experience left deep emotional scars, but it did not end her determination to survive and move forward.
How Comedy Became Her Lifeline
At one point, a social worker gave her an unusual choice: therapy or a comedy workshop.
She chose comedy.
That decision would change everything.
Humor became her way of coping with pain, connecting with people, and eventually building a career. What began as survival slowly turned into opportunity.
From Homelessness to Hollywood
Before success arrived, life remained difficult.
She spent periods of time homeless, sometimes living in her car while trying to pursue education and opportunities in entertainment.
