Valerie Perrine, the former Las Vegas showgirl who later rose to international fame and earned an Academy Award nomination, has passed away at the age of 82.
She died Monday morning after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease, according to her close friend, filmmaker Stacey Souther.
“It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away,” Souther wrote, describing her as courageous, kind, and full of life until the very end.
From Las Vegas Stage to Hollywood Spotlight
Before becoming a familiar face in Hollywood, Perrine began her career on the vibrant stages of Las Vegas.
Born in Galveston, Texas, she spent much of her childhood moving from place to place because of her father’s military career. During those early years she lived abroad in countries including Japan and France. After briefly attending college, she chose a different direction—one that would eventually lead her to entertainment.
Perrine became a dancer in the famous Lido de Paris show at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. Performing several shows each week in elaborate costumes helped her develop the confidence and stage presence that later defined her acting career.
Her move into film came unexpectedly. A chance meeting with an agent led to a screen test, which ultimately opened the door to Hollywood.
