For years, the disappearance of a young man in Iowa puzzled investigators and devastated his family. What began as a missing-person case during a winter storm eventually ended with a discovery no one expected — nearly ten years later.
A Sudden Disappearance
On the evening of November 28, 2009, 25-year-old Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada suddenly ran out of his home in Council Bluffs during a severe snowstorm.
According to his family, he had just returned from working a shift at the grocery store where he was employed. That night, however, something seemed wrong. His mother later recalled that he appeared frightened and told her he believed someone was following him.
He left the house barefoot in freezing conditions and never returned.
When he failed to come home, his family reported him missing the next day. Police launched search efforts, distributed flyers, and contacted friends and coworkers. Despite those efforts, no clear clues ever emerged.
Over time, the case grew colder, leaving loved ones with years of unanswered questions.
A Discovery Almost Ten Years Later
The mystery took a shocking turn in 2019.
Workers were dismantling equipment inside a former No Frills Supermarket that had closed several years earlier. As contractors removed large refrigeration units from the building, they made a disturbing discovery.
Human remains were found wedged in a narrow space behind one of the store’s large coolers.
Authorities were immediately notified. Investigators soon realized the remains might belong to the man who had disappeared nearly a decade earlier.
DNA testing later confirmed the identity: it was Murillo-Moncada.
What Investigators Believe Happened
Police believe Murillo-Moncada may have returned to the grocery store after leaving home that night.
Employees sometimes climbed onto the large cooler units while stocking shelves. Investigators think he may have attempted something similar.
At some point, he likely slipped and fell into a narrow gap between the refrigerator units and the wall — a drop estimated at around 12 feet.
Once inside that tight space, escaping would have been extremely difficult.
Even calling for help may not have made a difference. The refrigeration system produced constant loud mechanical noise that could easily have drowned out any cries for assistance.
An autopsy found no signs of violence or trauma, leading authorities to conclude his death was most likely a tragic accident.
A Mother’s Intuition
One detail in the case still stands out.
During the early years of the search, Murillo-Moncada’s mother reportedly believed her son might still be somewhere inside the store where he worked.
Investigators could never confirm her suspicion at the time. Yet when the remains were discovered years later inside the building, her intuition proved hauntingly close to the truth.
An Unusual Missing-Person Case
Police later described the case as one of the most unusual they had ever encountered. Discoveries like this — where someone is found hidden inside a structure years later — are extremely rare.
What made the situation even more heartbreaking was that the supermarket continued operating for years after Murillo-Moncada disappeared, with customers and employees unaware of what had happened behind the large refrigeration units.
Simulations Show How It Could Have Happened
After the story became widely known, digital reconstructions began circulating online attempting to recreate the accident.
These simulations demonstrate how someone could fall into the narrow gap behind the coolers and become completely hidden from view. They also illustrate how the loud refrigeration equipment could have masked any attempts to call for help.
Answers After Years of Uncertainty
For nearly a decade, Murillo-Moncada’s family lived without knowing what had happened to him.
The discovery in 2019 finally provided closure — even though the truth was heartbreaking.
Authorities ultimately ruled his death an accidental tragedy, closing one of the region’s most puzzling missing-person cases.
The story serves as a reminder that sometimes the answers to long-standing mysteries remain hidden in the most unexpected places.
