Jimmy Kimmel Takes a Sharp Swipe at Melania Trump During the Oscars
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel once again blended political humor with Hollywood spectacle, this time directing a pointed remark toward Melania Trump during the 2026 Academy Awards.
The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where comedian Conan O’Brien served as host for the 98th Oscars. The evening celebrated several notable achievements in film, with One Battle After Another reportedly winning six Academy Awards and Sinners taking home four.
Although the awards themselves generated significant attention, one of the night’s most talked-about moments came when Kimmel appeared on stage to present the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Known for incorporating political commentary into his comedy, the late-night host used the opportunity to deliver a joke that referenced the Trump family.
Kimmel has frequently criticized former President Donald Trump in his monologues, so it was not entirely unexpected that Melania Trump would also become part of the punchline—particularly given the recent release of her documentary.
While introducing the category, Kimmel made a general remark about documentaries before shifting to a line that drew immediate attention from the audience.
“There are also documentaries where you walk around the White House trying on shoes,” he joked.
He followed the comment with another line that made the reference clear.
“Oh man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”
The joke referred to “Melania,” a documentary released earlier this year that focuses on Melania Trump’s return to the White House after her husband’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. The film offers a behind-the-scenes look at her preparations for resuming the role of First Lady in 2025.
According to the project’s official description, the documentary includes footage of meetings, private conversations, and moments within areas of the White House that are rarely shown publicly, presenting Melania’s personal perspective during the transition.
Reports have indicated that Amazon paid around $40 million to secure exclusive rights to produce the film, making it one of the most widely discussed political documentary projects of the year.
Melania Trump addressed the mixed reactions shortly after the documentary premiered, expressing satisfaction with the outcome regardless of criticism.
“I’m very proud of the film so people may like it, may don’t like it, and that’s their choice,” she said in an interview with CNN. “We achieved what we want to achieve. For myself, it’s already successful. I’m very proud of what we did.”
Critics, however, were less enthusiastic. Several major publications offered strongly negative reviews.
The Hollywood Reporter described the project as “expensive propaganda,” while The Atlantic called it “a disgrace.” The Guardian also criticized the documentary, referring to it as “gilded trash.”
Audience responses online have also been divided, with the film reportedly receiving a relatively low user score on IMDb.
Kimmel’s joke at the Oscars is only the latest example of his ongoing public commentary about the Trump political sphere. Over the years, his monologues and award-show appearances have frequently included jokes aimed at Donald Trump and figures connected to his administration.
During the same segment, Kimmel also appeared to broaden his remarks to topics related to media and free speech. While discussing the risks faced by filmmakers who tell controversial stories, he delivered another tongue-in-cheek comment that drew laughter from the audience.
“Telling a story that could get you killed for telling it is real courage,” he said. “As you know, there are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech. I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea & CBS.”
The remark alluded to previous disputes involving Kimmel and political figures, including controversies that once led to his show briefly going off the air before later returning.
As often happens during major award ceremonies, the moment quickly spread across social media platforms, where viewers debated the joke. Some praised Kimmel’s sharp humor, while others argued that political commentary felt out of place at an entertainment event.
Regardless of the reactions, the brief moment ensured that Melania Trump’s documentary—and Kimmel’s long-standing commentary about Trump-related politics—became part of the conversation during one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.
