For most parents, the arrival of a new baby is a life-changing event. For Liverpool mum Becki Allen , that joy was multiplied — quite literally — when she learned she was expecting not one baby, not two, but three identical triplets .
Becki and her partner already had a daughter, Indiana, who was excited to become a big sister. The couple had dreamed of expanding their family, but nothing could have prepared them for what they saw during Becki’s ultrasound scan.
“I was in complete shock,” Becki told the Liverpool Echo . “We haven’t got any triplets in the family, so it came completely out of the blue.”
During her pregnancy, Becki suffered from severe headaches. Concerned, her doctors ordered an ultrasound to check that everything was okay. That’s when the incredible news came — she was carrying identical triplets , something that happens in only around one in 200 million births.
The couple quickly realised they had to triple their baby name brainstorming. Eventually, they settled on three matching names for their boys: Roman, Rocco, and Rohan — affectionately known as The Triple R .
The triplets were delivered via C-section at just 31 weeks, each weighing between 3 and 5 pounds. Because they were premature, the boys spent their first month in intensive care before being strong enough to go home.
Triplet pregnancies often come with health risks and complications, but these three were born fighters. Doctors initially thought the boys might not be truly identical, but DNA testing confirmed they were genetically the same.
“They’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows,” Becki explained, “but Roman’s is a little darker, and Rohan has a birthmark on his leg. That’s how we tell them apart. Their personalities are completely different, though.”
Caring for three newborns is no small feat. Becki spends around £80–£100 a week on nappies — roughly 150 in total — plus five packs of baby wipes. Indiana, now a proud big sister, loves helping out and has shown no signs of jealousy.
“Indiana adores them,” Becki said. “I do feel a bit sorry for her when I think about what it’ll be like growing up with three little brothers, though!”
Today, the family is thriving, their home filled with laughter, chaos, and endless nappies. Becki says she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Being a mum is the greatest blessing,” she said. “And having these three… it’s like winning the lottery of life.”
Daily life with three identical babies required a system. Feeding, sleeping, medical appointments, laundry, and the constant supply of nappies had to be organized around three children reaching each stage together. Even with matching faces, the boys began to show distinct temperaments, helping their parents recognize them through behavior as well as birthmarks.
Their premature arrival also made the first weeks especially emotional. Time in intensive care can leave parents balancing joy with anxiety as doctors monitor breathing, feeding, weight gain, and development. Bringing all three boys home marked a major milestone, but it also began the practical challenge of caring for several newborns at once.
The rarity of the pregnancy explains the continuing fascination with the family. Identical triplets develop when one fertilized egg divides, producing babies with the same genetic material. Doctors initially questioned whether all three boys were identical because multiple births can involve different combinations, but DNA testing settled the question.
For Indiana, becoming an older sister to three boys meant sharing attention and joining a household transformed overnight. Her enthusiasm gave the family another source of support and affection. Becki’s account emphasizes the exhaustion, cost, and planning involved, yet it also returns repeatedly to gratitude. The boys’ safe arrival and growing personalities turned an extraordinary medical event into an ordinary family life filled with routines, noise, and affection.
