Understanding Scleral Shells and Ocular Prosthetics
When someone “reaches the end of the road” with a severely damaged or blind eye due to persistent infections, structural defects, or extreme pain, medical teams look toward prosthetic solutions.
Depending on the underlying structural health of the eye socket, ocularists and surgeons typically utilize two primary methods to improve comfort and appearance:
- Prosthetic Eye Shell (Scleral Shell): This is a thin, custom-made acrylic shell painted to match the healthy eye. It fits directly over the existing, non-functional eye globe like a large, rigid contact lens. It avoids the need for a full removal surgery if the underlying tissue can tolerate it, providing volume and a natural appearance.
- Enucleation / Evisceration with an Orbital Implant: If the natural eye tissue is too diseased or painful to remain, surgeons remove the inner contents or the entire globe. They insert a permanent sphere (an orbital implant) into the socket to maintain structure, connecting it to the surrounding eye muscles.
