From Slovenia to the White House: The Untold Chapters of Melania’s Past
Prior to her emergence as the elegant First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump led a life shrouded in quiet privacy—one that involved a few closely guarded relationships. Very few individuals were aware of who these partners were. Until today.
Born Melanija Knavs in the small Slovenian village of Sevnica, Melania’s path to international stardom is far from typical. Long before her 2005 wedding to Donald Trump, she labored diligently to forge a modeling profession that transported her from the avenues of Ljubljana to Paris, Milan, and finally, New York City.
The Trump Introduction
Melania and the future leader first crossed paths in 1998 during a Fashion Week event at the Kit Kat Club in Manhattan. The gathering was organized by Italian entrepreneur Paolo Zampolli, who had recruited her for his agency, ID Model Management. Although Trump arrived at the event with another companion, he was reportedly mesmerized by Melania and requested her contact information.
However, according to her close acquaintance Edit Molnar, the model was “unimpressed” by the property tycoon, and dating him was “completely out of the question.”
“Melania remarked, ‘He is here with someone else. I am definitely not giving him my digits,'” Molnar shared with the New York Post, describing his friend as a “homebody.” “She wouldn’t even entertain the idea. Donald had to put in all the effort.”
“Not a Socialite”
Zampolli, who currently serves as a U.S. Ambassador, remarked: “She never went out with anyone in New York prior to Donald. She only visited the cinema alone or went to the gym. This is a woman who appeared on a massive billboard for Camel cigarettes in Times Square but stayed at home constantly,” Zampolli noted. “She was not a party enthusiast.”
In January 2005, Melania wed Donald in a grand ceremony at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The pair welcomed their son, Barron, the following year in 2006. But prior to Donald, which men had captured Melania’s interest?
Alleged Initial Romance
One of the first individuals publicly associated with the former Sports Illustrated model is Peter Butoln, who asserted he was her adolescent boyfriend during her school days in Slovenia. “It was my first love. My first genuine affection,” Butoln stated in an interview.
They reportedly met when Melania relocated to Ljubljana at age 17 for design studies. Butoln explained that when he first noticed her in the city center, he was immediately captivated. “I spotted her among a group of girls, and she was the most stunning one,” he said. Their relationship concluded when he departed for military duty, and their last interaction was in 1987, when Melania sent him a postcard with warm wishes from the coast.
However, a representative for the First Lady later refuted his assertions, claiming that Butoln was never her official partner.
Final Slovenian Relationship
Another figure linked to Melania’s history is Jure Zorcic, who met her in 1991. According to Zorcic, he was on his motorcycle when he noticed her walking and doubled back to introduce himself. “I had a realization and thought, ‘Wow, who is this woman? She is so striking,'” he told ABC News.
“Our meeting was like a scene from a film,” Zorcic remarked. After chatting over coffee, he explained that the two dated for several months and spent holidays with friends on the Croatian coast. Years later, she moved away to pursue modeling in Italy and France.
In 2000, they had a chance encounter in New York, where Melania addressed her former flame in English. “I asked her: Did you forget your Slovenian roots?” he remembered. She informed him she was residing between New York and Florida and had no intention of returning to Slovenia. Regarding her marriage to Donald, Zorcic reflected: “I believe her union with Trump was destiny. Two decades ago, nobody—not even her—believed she would live at the pinnacle of the world on Fifth Avenue.”
From Slovenia to Fifth Avenue
Following her 1998 meeting with Trump, her life transitioned from the quiet habits of a model to the intense glare of the global spotlight. While the billionaire was already a household name, Melania remained composed under the scrutiny. In her early interviews, she was open about her respect for him as both a partner and a potential statesman.
“He would be an excellent president,” she stated firmly in a 1999 interview. “He is very intelligent… He understands how to run a business. He would be a superb leader.” At that time, Trump was only contemplating a run for office, but Melania was already certain of his capability, prepared to show she was far more than just a “pretty accessory.”
