With heavy hearts, we report the sad news about this iconic musician who gave us so much

Songwriter Chip Taylor, best known as the creative mind behind the legendary hit “Wild Thing,” has died at the age of 86.

News of his passing was shared on March 24 by his longtime friend and fellow musician Billy Vera, who posted on social media: “RIP: Chip Taylor, my friend and songwriting mentor, last night in hospice,” alongside a photo of the two together.

Soon after, Taylor’s children, Kris and Kelly, confirmed the news in a message to fans.

“Hi all — we are sad to share that Chip passed away last night. His final days were peaceful. Chip always felt deeply grateful for the chance to connect with people through music and truly valued this community. He considered you all friends. We will miss him greatly.”

Born James Wesley Voight in 1940, Taylor grew up in a family with strong ties to both science and the arts. He was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and geologist Barry Voight, and the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie and her brother James Haven.

His musical journey began in the late 1950s when he performed with the band Town Three and recorded under the name Wes Voight. Later, adopting the stage name Chip Taylor, he discovered his true strength as a songwriter, creating songs that would resonate across generations.

Although “Wild Thing” became his most famous work, his songwriting career extended far beyond that single success. Taylor also wrote “Angel of the Morning,” which became widely known through Merrilee Rush’s recording. His songs were performed by artists such as Willie Nelson, Evie Sands, and Linda Ronstadt, and his influence reached even further with credits connected to performers like Janis Joplin, Cliff Richard, and The Hollies.

While he was widely admired for writing songs for other artists, Taylor also stepped into the spotlight himself. His 1975 single “Early Sunday Morning” achieved success on the country charts, reaching No. 28 and highlighting his own talent as both a singer and storyteller.

Over the years, his impact on music was formally recognized. In 2016, Taylor was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, honoring a career that spanned decades and left a lasting mark on popular music.

Even in his later years, Taylor remained closely connected with his listeners. According to his family, he valued the relationships he built through music and viewed his audience not simply as fans, but as friends.

Chip Taylor is survived by his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Carole Frey, who passed away in June 2025.
