Canada Shooting Victims Named as Community Mourns After Deadly Attack

On the afternoon of February 10, 2026, the quiet and close-knit mountain community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was struck by a tragedy that has shaken residents, families, and the entire nation of Canada. What was once a town known for its scenic landscapes, strong community ties, and peaceful way of life became the site of one of the deadliest acts of mass violence in modern Canadian history. The events unfolded quickly and with shocking ferocity, leaving nine people dead, including the suspected shooter, and dozens more injured — both physically and emotionally.

In the days that followed, Tumbler Ridge has been marked by grief, memorials, solemn vigils, and fundamental questions about loss, community resilience, and how to prevent future tragedies.

A Tranquil Town Torn Apart

Tumbler Ridge is a small remote community nestled in northeastern British Columbia. Families in the region have shared deep bonds through school events, local sports, and community activities. Yet on that Tuesday afternoon shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time, an active shooter alert shattered that sense of security.

Residents first heard reports of gunfire near a home on Fellers Avenue before the suspect entered Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. According to official emergency records, the suspected gunman — 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar — first shot and killed his 39-year-old mother and his 11-year-old half-brother at their residence.

Soon afterward, the suspect went to the school and opened fire, killing five students aged 12 to 13 and a 39-year-old educational assistant. In total, six victims were found dead at the school and two at the residence. The suspect was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. At least 27 people were injured, many of them students and staff.

Police responded within minutes, evacuating students and staff while emergency services worked to secure the area.

Remembering the Victims

Families and community members have shared emotional tributes to those lost. The students were remembered as kind, curious, and full of potential. One victim identified was 12-year-old Kylie May Smith, described as a joyful child who brought happiness to everyone around her. Another victim, Abel Mwansa Jr., was remembered by relatives both locally and overseas.

The educational assistant who was killed was widely respected and known for her dedication to helping students succeed.

Injuries and Ongoing Care

Many injured victims received treatment and were released, but some remain hospitalized. One 12-year-old girl who was shot in the head and neck was airlifted to a children’s hospital and remains in critical condition. Medical teams responded rapidly to provide emergency care.

A Community in Mourning

In the days following the tragedy, memorials with flowers, candles, and messages appeared throughout the town. Vigils and prayer services were held to honor the victims. Counseling and support services were made available to students, families, and first responders.

Government officials expressed condolences and pledged support for the grieving community. Schools and public institutions lowered flags to half-mast as a sign of mourning.

Healing and Moving Forward

Healing from such a tragedy will take time. Families and residents continue to support one another while remembering the lives lost. The victims’ memories are being honored through stories, memorials, and community solidarity.

Tumbler Ridge will never be the same, but through shared grief and support, the community is working toward healing and hope for the future.
